A Styrofoam hand-launched glider is a simple model aircraft primarily made from Styrofoam, a lightweight and mouldable material. These gliders are designed to glide through the air when thrown by hand.

Tips

Assembling the simpler glider models is easy for children. Our range includes slot-together models that are ready to fly quickly without glue, as well as classic kits with Jedelski or covered ribbed wings that achieve impressively long free flights. All models provide a playful way to develop constructive understanding and enhance motor skills during assembly and flying! Our balsa hand-launched gliders, such as those from Aeronaut or Guillows, are made from punched, milled, or laser-cut parts. Hand-Launched Gliders are Ideal for Craft Lessons

The slightly larger kits are perfect for craft lessons. Two main wing construction methods are used:

  • The so-called Jedelsky method, where the wings are made from a curved balsa sheet reinforced with a few ribs (for quicker and easier construction).
  • The classic ribbed construction with covering using paper, film, or thin balsa or veneer wood, such as poplar (more complex but usually lighter in weight).

Tip for Assembling Hand-Launched/Free Flight Models:

For assembling the glider models shown here, traditional wood glue, UHU hard, or super glue is recommended for quick assembly. If using super glue (CAUTION: only under adult supervision!) to bond the balsa parts, the free flight models can be flown shortly after. These smaller models are ideal toys, for example, for children's birthday parties.

Simple models are suitable for children from around 6 years with adult assistance. From 8 years onwards, children can assemble many models independently. More advanced kits with additional components are intended for children aged 10–12 years or for experienced hobbyists.

Yes! Balsa wood gliders are a fantastic way to practise craftsmanship and learn the basics of aerodynamics. They are perfect for craft lessons, technology projects in schools, or holiday programmes.

4. Are hand-launched gliders a good idea for a children's birthday party?

Absolutely! Glider kits are a creative and entertaining activity for a children's birthday party, combining crafting fun with action! Children can build, design, and then launch their own aircraft, organising exciting flying competitions. It's best to choose simple models to keep the focus on fun.

Yes! With small adjustments like bending the wings or adding weight to the nose, you can optimise the glide. Experimenting with weight distribution and throwing technique also helps.

8. Are the hand-launched gliders weatherproof?

Balsa wood is lightweight and sensitive to moisture. It's best to fly in dry weather or indoors. If you want to make the glider more weather-resistant, you can seal it with clear varnish.

9. Can I repair my hand-launched glider?

You can use balsa wood from our shop to make repairs or your own modifications if needed.
